Putting Your Firm's Historians out to Pasture
With regard to making value, only the future counts. The check from the past has been cashed. Making decisions based on the past is similar to driving forward while looking in the rear view mirror. The past can influence the future positively, but often it is distracting. Just because we did it in the past doesn't cut it in today's world. Legacy decisions, people, and products are often encumbrances for firms competing in dynamic industries.
Does your organization have a stable of "historians" in the leadership ranks? If so, it might be time to re-evaluate their role in moving the organization forward. It may be time to put them out to pasture.
